http://www.maggieflaniganstudio.com/movement-class/tense-actor-vs-released-actor/ Julie Crockett teaches movement for actor at the Maggie Flanigan Studio. In this video Julia talks about how an actor's tension will affect the performance. We go to the theatre, or hopefully we to the theatre, to have some sort of empathetic experience. To live through something with an actor, whether it is on stage or on screen. What happens when an actor is tense, and we all know those kinds of actors, is that the audience experiences only their tension or their discomfort in their body, and that manifests a lot of different ways. It can be some sort of vocal restriction, you can see it sometimes in an actor’s jaws or in their hands. It can be something that you hear in their voice. On the contrary, when a an actor is nice and released, not only are they better able to process their personal experiences but the audience is able to enter their world, we are at ease, we are able to live through what it is that they are living through. I would take that one step further and I would say that an actor who is released is an actor who has presence, physical presence or stage presence. I think that there is this idea that presence is something that you are born with. You either have it or you don’t. I think in fact, presence is something that we can cultivate by releasing our own habits of tension. A released actor is somebody that the audience really wants to watch. Out eyes are drawn to them. If you think about who it is that you would rather hang out with a party. If you want to hang with the guy in the corner who has his legs crossed, his arms crossed and doesn’t know what to do with his hands - or the more approachable person. To me, it would be the person who is nice and open, open arms a released smile and at ease.
