maggie flanigan studio reopens TEASE 03

Maggie Flanigan Studio, an acting academy in New York, NY, is happy to announce that the studio is reopening its in-person instruction with the grand reopening set for September 10, 2021. Registration is now open for one of the top two year acting programs in New York City that is being offered by the acting studio. After being forced to shut down temporarily its in-person training as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, they had to move to the virtual space. Nevertheless, the studio persevered by adapting its classes to ensure that it will continue to be the premier source of instruction for the Meisner acting technique. The Maggie Flanigan Studio’s two year in-person program is designed to teach the Meisner Technique of acting, which is actually a revolutionary approach that was named after the legendary actor and teacher Sanford Meisner. https://flic.kr/p/2mmEtCJ

Charlie Sandlan, Executive Director and Head of Acting at Maggie Flanigan Studio, says, “The last year and a half has tested the world's resiliency. It has been most devastating for performers, students, crew members, and the small businesses that are responsible for most of the serious arts training in cities across the US for our artistic community. We needed to reimagine our idea of theater, performance, and the classroom. As we collectively move forward to in-person collaboration, we have an opportunity to rebirth our creative lives. If you have been sitting on a dream, keeping it dormant, waiting for a time to roll the dice on yourself, the time to start a new chapter is now. Rarely are we given an opportunity to start again. It's scary and requires a leap of faith but don't let this next chapter be wasted.” The core of the two year acting program at the Maggie Flanigan Studio is the Meisner Technique. The is a method of training actors that is based on the truth and the imagination of the artist. It begins with a very basic Meisner repetition exercise that is designed to sharpen the actor’s ability truly listen, answer, and respond. During the first year that is made up of more than nine months of training, the work of the students evolves into a very rich improvisational Meisner exercise that includes all the fundamentals of acting. The actor is asked to bring this work to three rounds of scenes during the first year of training. This is essential because if the actor is unable to bring the fundamentals to scene work, the exercise is actually useless. Furthermore, the actor will learn how to determine the previous circumstance of a scene, how to establish an emotional connection with it, and how to develop an acting relationship. The capability to act truthfully even under imaginary circumstances is the standard that actors need to strive to achieve. https://flic.kr/p/2mmDfAb

The second year of training provides the actor with tools to hone his or her character work, which is the highest form of acting. This means the actor is able to step into the shoes of another person and elucidate the human condition in every aspect. Script interpretation and character development is the heart of the second year of the acting training. Another key part of the second year of training is teaching the actor about the rehearsal process and what will be expected of the actor professionally. The goal of the two-year acting program at the Maggie Flanigan Studio is to instill in the person a way of acting that will function as the foundation of their talent. As such, the Maggie Flanigan Studio is willing to accept all students who have a truly serious desire to develop their craft as professional actors, who would like to get more than just acting lessons in New York City. The studio is focused on meeting the highest professional standards and students are expected to be capable of working within a creative environment that is constantly requiring artistic excellence. Ralph Anthony, a stand-up comic, discusses how the summer intensive helped him become a more vulnerable person and actor. Q: Ralph, what did you learn about yourself over these past six weeks in this program that was a surprise? That's a good one. I think I was pretty surprised about how vulnerable I could be. I don't think anybody is that comfortable being vulnerable, especially living in New York. In New York, you have to have this tough exterior all the time and opening up those little doors about yourself and your past, it's tough. Sometimes, people just don't want to do it. You're scared. It's almost like opening Pandora's box where you're afraid if it's going to be a flood. It's like a flood of emotions. I learned how to do that and how to do it to make me feel comfortable and made me feel excited to be in a role or in acting with my partner in front of this class. It was inspiring. Growing up, it was tough. For certain scenes or certain parts of the independent activity, I pulled upon those experiences to get me where I needed to be. It was cool just to see how I could connect from here or disconnect from this and rely on the heart, right from here. I remember that's what Charlie always said. Placement of Concentration - https://www.maggieflaniganstudio.com/18-month-acting-program/placement-of-concentration/ 18 Month Acting Program - Call Maggie Flanigan Studio (917) 789-1599 The 18 month actor training program with the Maggie Flanigan Studio is a professional acting program based on the Meisner technique. In this video Charlie Sandlan, the executive director and head of acting at the studio, discusses how actors can act with more freedom by focusing on the placement of their concentration. One of the first things that we address in chapter one, right off the bat, and it is a fundamental backing, it is the placement of your concentration. Most actors that they're all trained, their attention is on themselves and this is very much a very human thing. We're worried about what people think of us, we're worried about how we sound, we're worried about how we look and it keeps us in life, withholding what we say, editing ourselves, judging ourselves. The first key to your freedom and actor is to get the attention off of yourself. In acting, you want to be able to have your placement of concentration either on the other person or what you're doing. In the first chapter, we're going to get you very good at making the other person more important than you and teaching you how to really truthfully do, how to get your attention off of yourself and onto what you're doing. For the last year, we have taken our entire conservatory program online. This includes the six weeks summer Meisner intensive, which we are going to do for the second summer in a row on the Zoom platform. I thought I would just take a few minutes here to just talk about what I've learned as a teacher this last year. I have now had the opportunity to teach the six weeks summer intensive last year, all of my first year students and my second year students who have been moving forward with their training online. I was resistant at first, I have to admit. I didn't think it was possible, I thought the integrity of the work is going to be sacrificed, that you can't really train an actor online and I was wrong. I have been blown away by what my students are accomplishing. The thing about the summer intensive, it's the first third of Meisner's first year work. It's three days a week, it's six weeks, it's intense. I can promise you this, that online, you can absolutely learn how to get out of your head and get into your heart, how to get onto your spontaneous impulses. You can learn how to really listen, how to go from anticipated moment to unanticipated moment. You can learn how to get the attention off of yourself and onto the other person. You can learn how to truthfully do under an imaginary circumstance. You can sensitize this instrument so that your vulnerability, your empathy, your humanity can begin to operate. You can learn how to craft the way an actor needs to learn how to craft. Very simply, very specifically, very personally. Meisner Summer Intensive 2021 - Maggie Flanigan Studio - 2021 Meisner Summer Intensive You can take all of that and apply it to scenes, which is what we're going to do. You can learn how to improvise your way through a piece of material, how to break out of habits, whether that's adjusting to the text, line reading, manipulating yourself emotionally, all of this can be accomplished online. If you have the grit and the resilience and the determination to move forward with your creative dreams, your artistic vision of the type of life you want to have for yourself. The successful people that are going to come out of this pandemic are the ones that have not waited, who have not sat idly by for a better time to be able to do something. Two Year Acting Program Interview - Tayler Hamilton - Maggie Flanigan Studio - Call (917) 789-1599
Two Year Acting Program- https://www.maggieflaniganstudio.com/two-year-acting-program/tayler-hamilton/ Two Year Acting Programs - Maggie Flanigan Studio - Call (917) 789-1599 The two-year acting program with the Maggie Flanigan Studio provides actors with the tools, experience, and foundation that they need to become professional actors. Tayler Hamilton talks about the decision to train professionally, why she thinks actors need to train, and her experience this year training with the studio remotely. What did you think it meant to train as an actor before you came to Maggie Flanigan Studio, and what do you think it means to qualify as an actor now? Tayler: Before I came to Maggie, I thought that acting was memorizing lines and doing your scene and just taking your cues and character and just doing it how you would do it as a person. We would call that, I guess, pedestrian behavior. I figured I didn't need to train. I had some Performing Arts experience from growing up, and I danced a lot, and I did theater when I was a kid and in high school and stuff, but I never had formal training. I was like, well, I don't think I need that, which looking back, was such a joke because it's so important to have the training and the foundations. It means to train as an actor because you have to give what Charlie and Karen and Maggie taught me was you have to give your heart and your soul and your life to put in the work to training to become an artist take a lot. It takes a lot of self-work and a lot of looking inside yourself, and I had never done that before, and that completely changed my life. It's a lot to train, but you need it as if you're trying to be like an established actor who is taken seriously, you need to have that training under your belt. Q: What resonated with you that's particular to the Meisner technique? First-year, listening. I don't think I listened to my scene partner ever before I got to Maggie. I would be thinking about what I was supposed to do, oh my god, I have to do this and next thing next. I feel like I look strange. I was concerned about what was going on with me. I didn't listen or take anything in from the other person. First-year, that was huge for me. I learned so much about taking things personally and standing up for yourself, which was another big thing from the first year is finding your perspective as a person. What do you care about? What makes you tick? What makes you happy? What makes you angry? What gets you going? What fires you up? I didn't know that before. It's essential to know as an actor because you have to relate all that to your work. Having that in the first year was life-changing. First-year was incredible for me. I grew as a human and as an actor. Second-year, oh, I learned just so much about discipline and the amount of work that goes into working on a massive part with complex depth. I have an immense new respect for the actors who do such work and are so good at it. Now I know how much work they put into it, like how detailed you have to be and how specific you have to craft them. Second-year, I learned that I couldn't just bring my point of view to everything. I can't just take on a character like Tayler. I worked on a scene the second year, Rosemary with Ginger, I played Ginger, and she's very reserved and very uptight. She's just been like coddled, I guess, her whole life and she's not outspoken at all. She doesn't stand up for herself, and that's not me at all. That wasn't me. I struggled with that because that was the first scene that I worked on second-year that was in point of being a real character. I've learned a lot just about how to set aside who you are, have those things about who you are as a person, but as an actor, you need to know how to relate to different types of characters and other kinds of people because who wants to watch you play yourself all the time? I think just learning that, and only the simplicity of the things you do makes a piece of acting so good. Summer Acting Classes Ralph Anthony 03 - Maggie Flanigan Studio

Summer Acting Classes Ralph Anthony 03 - Maggie Flanigan Studio Q: Ralph, what did you learn about yourself over these past six weeks in this program that was a surprise? He says, "You can't think from up here. You got to come from right here." Using my heart instead of my head to expose my vulnerability was the biggest thing that I learned. Q: You're a stand-up comedian? Yes. Q: How do you think the training will help you as a comedian? I like to play off the audience a lot, especially in the beginning. If I'm doing a more extended set, if I'm doing 20 minutes, to half an hour, 45 minutes, I like to play off the crowd first. There are 200 people in there or 100 people or 50 people, whatever it is, they're one person. They combine just to be one. It's like you're playing off your partner. Even though they're looking at me, I just keep shifting the focus back onto them. It's cool, the give and takes that you have. I had a show on Saturday where I did half an hour, and it was one of the best half an hour I ever did. It was just so cool to be present. I think that's something that I learned about myself before. Just how to be more present and actively listen to what the audience was giving me back and play off their facial expressions or what they were saying. I think that's really how this course and this class has helped me be more present and playing off of them more. It's a weird version of the repetition exercise. It's a lot of fun. This past weekend, it was one of the most fun times I've had on stage. I was just playing off of people because it was a smaller crowd. It was 7,000 degrees outside this weekend, so there weren't many people out, so I had to hone and use what I've been learning to get that give and take, that back and forth, and just really use them and pretend like they were only one partner. It was, let's say, 30 people there, but there was just one scene partner for me, so I'm just playing off of them a little bit better. Summer Acting Classes Ralph Anthony 02 - Maggie Flanigan Studio

Summer Acting Classes Ralph Anthony 02 - Maggie Flanigan Studio Q: How would you say the sense of community at the studio contributed to your experience in the past six weeks? Whether it's how you get to watch your classmates with the value in that or some people are usually only interested in private coaching, but whether it was just the valuable lessons you learned from watching them or working outside of the classroom? Having a sense of community, for me, being new to this whole acting, just acting in general, I think having that sense of community helped because we all struggle. We're all going through our things and figuring out where we're going in this course and how we're learning. You learn by doing, so if you're watching somebody else and seeing what they're doing well, you want to find out. You want to talk to them. A couple of kids in my class, a couple of other students that, watching them, was just so phenomenal, just so phenomenal. Right off the bat, especially for me, I was impressed by how these actors can get their minds where they needed to be with the independent activity. Get their account, get their heart, get everything aligned so they could have a successful interaction. That was tough for me in the beginning. Seeing them so successful and just being able to talk to them, I think it's cool. I would never want to do one on one. I don't think I would ever want to do that. I would want to be in a classroom setting because you need people to lean upon. For lack of a way of putting it, but when a peer comes up to you and says, "Wow. That was amazing. We were on the edge of our seat last Friday watching you and your scene partner do your scene." We were doing Wednesday's Child. Just to do that scene and then have those compliments, it was terrific. It was so amazing because I almost blacked out. It was like there was no one in the classroom. Charlie wasn't there. None of my other- students were there. It was just me and my partner or my partner and I. Then to hear that in the end, it's cold, you need that community. Especially with this because it's not easy. If it were easy, everybody would do it, or everybody would do it and be successful. I think having a sense of community is fantastic. We had that same vision. Everything was all aligned. You don't spend money. You don't invest in something if you're not passionate about it. Everybody, whatever their talent level was, had the same level of passion, and it just all aligned. It was refreshing to see. Watching other people grow, not only so much myself, but if you have a one-on-one, it's just you and your teacher. You need to see the other people around you. It's fun to watch your peers come alive. Those last- let's see, we finished yesterday? Monday, Friday, Wednesday, just seeing people come alive. It's inspiring, and it makes you want to get to the next level. I love that sense of community. It's pretty cool. acting teacher new york ny - charlie sandlan

acting teacher new york ny - charlie sandlan - (917) 789-1599 Q: How would you describe Charlie Sandlan as an acting teacher? How much time do we have? Charlie's second to none. Hands down, second to none. Probably, one of the most excellent teachers I've had in terms of anything I've done in my life. He's a master of his craft. When you're at that level, you have a higher bar of expectations, and you don't lower the bar. That's what I love. That's how I was brought up. That's how my parents raised me. That's how some of the most influential coaches I had from playing sports taught me and trained me. He has a standard, and he won't let it waver. He is tough, but he's fair. There were a couple of times where I wasn't where I needed to be. I don't want to say dropped the ball because I was so new, and there's no ball to drop. I think people forget that you wish to constructive criticism, and that's really what it is. He has such a vested interest in each one of the students. You wouldn't be accepted into this program if he didn't see anything. That's why you have the interview process in the beginning because he gets a feel for you. He's not going to let everyone in if he doesn't feel like you're going to be committed. He's tough, but he's fair. He reminded me a lot of a coach that I had in high school. I was a big track athlete. My coach was just; he saw something in me that sometimes I couldn't even notice. I used to run a 400 open, and I would go so hard that for the last 50 meters, 100 meters, I would run out of gas. My coach would start when you come around that final bend, and he would run the last 50 meters, the last 100 meters, and he would be yelling at me and pushing me, and I would keep going and going. When I had nothing left, I still kept going. That's what Charlie reminded me of, right from the first class. I don't want to be cuddled. I want to be pushed. I want you to get on me. If I'm not doing it, you tell me how to do it. It's tough love, and he loves his craft. He loves acting. He eats, breaths, and sleeps it. It's just cool, and it's fantastic to have somebody so passionate as your teacher because it creates that passion. We all want to do something. We are all on this program to be actors. That's what we want to do. Sometimes people forget, you could be enthralled with being an actor, but you aren't fascinated with all the work that you have to go along with it. That's what Charlie brings to the table. He gets you to be passionate about the hard work and all the little steps. I mean he got me-- I almost cried twice in class. Look at the size of me. He got me to be vulnerable, him and Karen. They were like a one-two punch. When he wasn't there, she was there. It was just amazing to have that level of intensity. I honestly can't say enough great things. He's a cool dude. You want teachers like that, especially for this. You want somebody that's like that. You don't want somebody that's kind of not do something wholeheartedly. You don't want a teacher, especially with this, you don't want a teacher that's a, I don't want to say like a failed actor, but like an actor trying to get to where you are going. When he explained how he got into teaching, I think that's what helped mold our perception, at least in my opinion, because his goal is to educate and help us. That's what you want as a teacher. You want somebody who will cultivate your ability and help you find what you're looking for. There's a lot of things-- this is a big complicated thing right here. This is very complicated, but he helps simplify it as best he can. I was legitimately sad that yesterday was our last class. I didn't want it to end because I like coming here. I love hearing; I just liked hearing the Charlieisms. "Would you be willing to walk on hot coals for this?" That's one thing that I remember, especially with that independent activity. He says, "If you have passion, you have to be willing to walk on hot coals if you have the desire." I'm ready to burn the bottoms of my feet off. That's what Charlie does. He makes you want to burn the bottom of your feet. You want to keep working. You want to be dedicated. You don't want to let him down. That's a big thing. Meisner Summer Intensive - Kamau Mitchell Interview - Maggie Flanigan Studio (917) 789-1599

Getting My Soul Back On Track The Meisner Summer Intensive with Maggie Flanigan Studio is a training program for actors and students who want to learn about the Meisner Technique and experience what it means to train as a professional. In this interview at the studio earlier this year, Kamau discusses his involvement in the six-week Meisner Summer program. "When I started the summer intensive I thought I understood what needed to go into this work. I knew it in my head I had a massive ego and I was very insecure. I now understand what humility truly feels like and how to put that into my work." Professional actors, as well as students enrolled in undergraduate programs, choose to study with Maggie Flanigan Studio during the summer to experience the Meisner Technique as Sanford Meisner intended. Students interested in applying to the program should apply online and contact the studio with any enrollment questions by calling (917) 789-1599. =================== Kamau, what did you think about the need to train as an actor before you started the six-week summer intensive? I had a good idea of what it meant to be training as a good actor. I understood logically the work that it took to put in. I realized inevitably like, "Yes, it takes hard work, it takes smart work, and you have to be working every day and building your muscle every day and about how much work you have to put in". Logically, I understood. Truly understanding and feeling what that's like in my bones is quite different. I think that I didn't have a sense of humility that went into my work, and now I understand what that humility truly feels like in putting that into the action. What were you doing before you started this six weeks summer intensive? Three years ago, I graduated from Howard University. While I was there, one of my professors and a couple of my professors recommended this program. Kim Bay, she studied at Rutgers, she told me how amazing this program is. I always knew that it was in my timeline; I just didn't know when I was going to do it. After I graduated, I was in DC for two years, just building up my resume, which worked out nicely. I was booking work immediately right off the bat. Then I moved here about a year ago, and said, "Oh, I'm good, but so is everyone else." That instant gratification I was receiving in DC went away, so I was down on myself, and I realized that my self-worth was created by results that I was always getting. I had a massive ego because I was very insecure. I had this ego, and it showed itself when I wasn't getting the work that I was getting in DC. I was auditioning left and right, off-Broadway, Broadway, TV, and film. I got some audition invites, which was cool. I was like, "Okay, feeding my ego, but thank you. Thank you I need some; maybe I'm starving." I ended up booking some commercials, but I was down. I was disappointed. I just remember there was one point where I just had to stop auditioning. "I am not doing this until I get myself together until I get my soul back on track." I stopped auditioning, and I was reading a lot. I read a lot of books to kind of feed my soul to just educate myself and still train a little bit by not having to audition. People always say, "You need audition, and that's how you train, and that auditioning is so much fun because you're acting." "Yes, but I also just want to act and do something without having to worry about getting something." Because auditioning it's not always fun. People always say it's fun. Just be real." It's not. It's not fun, but that's what my ego was saying. It wasn't fun because I wasn't receiving those things that I did. So I was on this journey of getting my soul back on track, reading, and just simply living my life. I was not so concerned and caught up in what I created my future to be, like getting so caught up in my dreams and putting my ideas over God's path for me and relying on my thoughts to give me happiness. I was getting to a place where I wanted to know what it's like to be humble and not have to freak out when I don't understand something when I'm right. I was so down on myself because of all these results and me logically, before I knew it's not about the result like logically- Yes, I know it doesn't matter until you know. -but truly feeling what that is like, "Phew." You just feel joy when you only live life every day and being okay with where you're at. There's a difference between being okay with you and being lazy because I feel people get caught up in that sometimes. Many people are worried about being content in where they're at because they think I might fall into laziness. No. They are very much different. I decided that I was going to take this program. What I wanted out of this program was an idea of what it's like to have a strong work ethic. I thought a strong work ethic was the thing that I needed because I relied so much on everything else. I'm charming, and I know how to use that, and I was given all these things, I think I am good at what I do. I felt that I could kind of pass. I could get by, and I'm good looking too, so things are going to work. But that's not the kind of actor deep down I want to be. I don't want to be an actor who's good looking and who can act okay, who is just mediocre. That's never been me. I'd prefer being known for my acting, and not have this star dream career. I wish to act, and I want to get to the truth every time. Being consistent every time, that's my main goal, just being logical. I talked with Charlie, we set up an interview to do this program, and I told him what I wanted. I said, "I want to be an actor. I don't want to be a star." Star sounds nice. It does look nice, making millions of dollars doing what you love to do. That sounds great, but I know that that's not important. I know that doesn't guarantee me joy. All that dream stuff that I created in my head and dreams are good to have, but I focused on my goals. I was so result-driven that it was just shutting me down. I was upset every day because I was not getting these results that I was seeking. I was just talking with Charlie about all this. My favorite actor is Christoph Waltz; he is this German White man. He is so different from me, and I think he is just absolutely incredible. He works in such a healthy way. I respect Daniel Day-Lewis. He is the main person who I think of in terms of method acting. Even though Leonardo DiCaprio back in his young days, he was a method actor. Method actors. I respect them, and I think it's cool that they do what they do. For me, that would drive me crazy. One, because I want a lot of different things. I want a family. I'm currently engaged, so having a wife, kids, and being a method actor, I feel that you have got to be single to be a method actor. Being someone else every single day, it's too much. I would instead do it a healthier way. So I talked to Charlie, it ended up working out, and I got into this program. https://flic.kr/p/2jc4cpW

In this interview, Adam Marsh discusses his experience in the program and why he has decided to enroll in the two year program. Katie: What was something that happened during these past six weeks that was a surprise or that changed you? Adam: I've had so many experiences that I didn't even realize I was capable of, like just experiencing despair and rage, and I said some horrible things to people. I didn't know I was capable of any of those things. I think I've cried more in the last few weeks than I had for years before that, five or six years before that, and I was afraid that I wasn't going to be able to-- This is terrible. I thought about it this way, but that I wasn't going to be able to fake those kind of emotions, and I've really felt them. Katie: Before you started the six-week summer intensive at Maggie Flanigan Studio, had you ever studied the Meisner technique before? Adam: No, I didn't know anything about it. I had a vague idea that it was about repetition or something, and that was it.
