new york acting program - maggie flanigan studio - Ian Hayes 03

Q: Why did you decide to study at Maggie Flanigan Studio? There are a lot of different Meisner studios, different teachers, why did you decide this place was the best place for you? A: Two reasons. I eventually went to a larger college. I came from a very small town and I thought I wanted that, which I think did me well, but I hated being a number. I did not complete college and I think, that had a lot to do with it. When I knew that I wanted something, a more rigorous training in acting, a big part about it for me was the community. Will the teacher know who I am? Will they know what I’m late? Will I know the other students? Will people care if I am there or if I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing or not? Because at the school I was at, I didn’t get that at all. I kind of just went, “Well, screw everyone." I’m much younger, then. Reason two is honestly just when I met with Charlie. I was looking at a Michael Chekhov studio as well in Boston. It’s the only serious studio in Boston. I met with Charlie in my initial interview and he told me the schedule. I went back to the teacher and head of that Chekhov studio and- who actually I later found out had worked with Maggie years ago. He also teaches the Meisner Technique. So I really- I believe in it and I think Chekhov is the perfect-- Anyways, when I told them Charlie's schedule, this guy said, "There is no way you're telling me that this guy does nine hours for this every week.” I said, "Well, yes.” He was like, "There’s no way it's possible." To me, I said, "Well, okay. It is because that's what he does, therefore, I definitely want to go to this guy." Because he obviously takes it much more seriously and that’s just what right to me. I was like, "I'm definitely going to learn a lot more from Charlie than the other guy who won't give that to his students or to the craft, teaching how to act.” Those are the two big reasons for me. Master Class for Actors | Master Class Expectations | Call 917-789-1599

www.maggieflaniganstudio.com/master-class/expectations-ac... Maggie Flanigan teaches the Master Class for Actors at the Maggie Flanigan Studio. In this video Maggie discusses the commitment and dedication that she expects from her students. I expect the students that take the class to have a real commitment to themselves as artists, that they are serious and that they're willing to play full out with themselves. I'm not a teacher for everyone. I don't want this class to to be with students just come in here and do not rehearse, do not work for the process and have no homework. I am not interested in that and they will not last long in the class. I am interested in people who really want to solve a problem and commit themselves to the artist in them and willing to play full out with themselves. Then this class will be a good experience. What is the Structure of the Master Class? The Master Class is 10 weeks, once a week for four hours. You work every class and you must rehearse at least twice a week so that when you come to the next week you really have a substantial amount of work to bring in and offer to your partner. You will probably do two scenes. If for some reason your partner is missing because of work or is going to be late, bring in a monologue. So you can work on monologues. With the scenes, you can begin to look at material now. What part would you like the work on? What playwright would you like to work on? You can work on something that you would love to do that you're not ready for yet, but it has to be within your can, something you'd love to do dramatic or comedic that you've never done one, one or the other. You are willing to fall on your face because that's when really wonderful something wonderful happens. Wonderful things happen with your ability to take chances. Master Acting Class Lisa LaMattina 01

Master Acting Class Lisa LaMattina 01 (917) 789-1599 Why Did You Decide To Take Master Class With Maggie Flanigan? I had been out of the studio for about three years when I decided I wanted to come back and study with Maggie again. I mean, I always wanted to come back to the studio because it's such a community and when you leave here you're kind of thrust into everyone doing their own thing. I definitely missed the sense of community and all the people but at the same time you got to go out there and do it. So after about three years I saw she was doing a master class and the timing was right because I was really starting to doubt myself again. You go in as a new actor you go into an office for the first time, you meet them and you don't get a call back. But then they call you again. So then you go in and then maybe you get the call back and then you don't hear anything for them for months. Then you're asking yourself “What am I doing?” I was starting to doubt my process. I was worried that because I wasn't working on these big plays anymore. I wasn't working on this juicy text. I was getting two pages, three pages under five. All these things are what a new actor gets so I wasn't sure if I was applying the techniques that I learned here on the work that I was being given now. So I really wanted to go back to be fixed to make sure that I haven't forgotten anything. That was exactly what I needed because there were definitely little things I forgot but then overall I felt like it was in me it was like muscle memory. I was using it on a daily basis and not even realizing it because it became part of me very naturally. http://flic.kr/p/Sm2QPz

Acting Master Class with Maggie Flanigan 01

Acting Master Class with Maggie Flanigan (917) 789-1599 Why Did You Decide To Take Master Class with Maggie Flanigan? I decided to take the master class with Maggie's because I knew that it was exactly what I needed at this point in my career. I was taking industry workshops, and I was auditioning as much as possible, but I wasn't getting the creative satisfaction that I wanted. After coming out of this training program you want to dive into these works, and you want to practice your craft, and sometimes it's a lot harder to do that once you're out of school. This was the perfect opportunity for me to get my juices flowing and my artistry back on track. How Important Was It That The Class Was Small In Size? Having a small class was fantastic because Maggie gave each one of us the time of day. She was very particular with her notes. She knew exactly what to tell you, exactly what you needed to hear it and we all about to work for every single class, and we got to listen to the notes that she was giving everybody else and not feel rushed. It was a very comfortable setting. You get to know the other actors in the room, and it's very supportive. It's such a small intimate setting that you can't find anywhere else. Acting Master Class with Maggie Flanigan (917) 789-1599 What Was It Like To Work So Closely with Maggie In Class? Maggie is a gem. She's the best. Being able to work with her one want to come to her one-on-one, it's a gift. You can't buy that kind of thing. She is so honest and genuine with every single one of us. I feel comfortable coming to her about my struggles and about any of the questions that I'm having with the work. That is not something I can say about anybody else. She just grounds you as a person. She will look you straight in the eye, and she will go right into your heart and give you what you need. So having that one-on-one is so special. I email her when I can't see her face-to-face, and she gets back to me. She is just wonderful. If you have a chance to work with her, you have to do it. Acting Master Class with Maggie Flanigan (917) 789-1599 What Did You Find Difficult About The Class? There are a lot of difficulties in the masterclass. The work mainly is tough. She is going to give you something that's going to push you to grow, to push you outside of your comfort zone. She did it for me. I was given a scene from “Enemy of the People, ” and she gender bent the roles. “Why is she doing this to me?” It was incredible because I got to work on this side of myself that I wasn't comfortable working on. I thought in the beginning, “That's just not my point of view” and I found out that maybe could be my point of view if I just look at it differently. Now, whenever I look at other roles or other characters that I'm working on, I remember working on that scene and I remember how I felt in this empowering character. I’m able to bring that now to other work now. That is priceless. Acting Master Class with Maggie Flanigan (917) 789-1599 How Did the Class Get You Back On Course with Your Career? Masterclass rejuvenated my artistry. It reminded me about the fundamentals, about listening, about being honest, being spontaneous, being pure and willing to take a risk. It's just felt so good to work with somebody who spoke the same language as me, someone who respected the work as much as I did. It just lit me back on fire. I was ready to go back into the next audition room because I have worked on the sides of myself that I forgot about, honestly. When she's giving another one, I plan on being right back in there.
